Yesterday, Toxic had our first practice of the season. It was a fifty degrees and sunny - a combination that's hard to ignore in the middle of January in Cincinnati, Ohio where winter weather is typically somewhere between 20 and 30 degrees with clouds and strong winds. Carrying over the format from the other blog entries, here's what went down:
1. Focused throwing
2. Come-to drill
3. Triangle of death
4. 5v5 scrimmaging
We spent a longer time than usual on throwing because it had been so long since anyone had the opportunity to actually get outside and throw because we were plagued by arctic weather during our winter break. After we all got our throws together, we moved into a come-to drill where we did open side forehand and backhand and then break-side forehand (because I think it's a little more applicable to game situations). For some reason, there are always a couple of girls who request the triangle of death, and since we had a good number of girls for it (nine), and it was a friendly reminder that everyone needs to get back into shape, we also did that.
We brought in a couple of the boys who were watching our practice (B-team boys, not random ones) to bring our numbers up to a 5v5 scrimmage which looked really good for the first scrimmage of the year. Both teams implemented a two handler, three cutter system and it worked well on the slightly smaller field. There was a decent amount of flow whose only opponent seemed to be that people had forgotten how to catch which should be easily fixed. But the movement was there: handler to cutter to cutter to handler to reset, etc. It really did look good.
We ended practice with an ab workout. The best way I've found to do abs with a medium-sized group of people is to have everyone pick an exercise, and you do that for 30 seconds. Go around the circle doing 30 seconds of everyone's exercise (try to avoid duplicates), and voila. Ours ended up being 6.5 minutes of workout because the guys stuck around and did them with us. It was a great way to end practice and is something that I would like to continue this semester.
And because it's still warm outside, we're having practice again tonight! Woo!
